Dissecting a Squid
The students are entering the room, surprised to see newspaper on the tables. For the first time the students are silent in the beginning of class, I guess they are ready for the dissecting lad. well i guess I have spoken to soon the voices have started. Mrs Vibbert cant speak without someone saying something. A student is passing out the bright green gloves to his classmates. Children are sasking to keep the bright colored gloves after the asignment. Of course the answer is absolutely NO. The students are now putting on gloves and aprons preparing for the dissecting. The materials are passed out scissors, tweezers, two pins, a Squid anatomy chart, napkin, a tray and the SQUID. Mrs. Vibbert is giving the rules before they start and the students are very anxious to begin. The students are asking questions. They want to know why they look dried out?, are they in the octupus family?, can we eat them?, can we touch them?, they are also saying that the squid look like chicken or beef from the Beef Bowl. What an imagination. The students have discovered that they squid have little freckles, that are used for their cammaflage. The smell is horrible! The students are now learning the parts of the Squids body. The students are asking to lick or take a bite of the Squid, YUCK!! The voice level is High with question after question. If the students just relax all the questions would be answered, but they are excited and won't allow Mrs. Vibbert to speak. The students are arguing whi will do the cutting. The cutting of the mantle was not as easy as they thought due to the toughness of the skin. Some students think that its awsome and some think its totally nasty. The students are looking for the internal parts of the Squid using their Squid anatomy charts. The 1st part they found were the gills they look like feathers. The students are now discovering if their Squid is male or female. A student screamed "It Stinks" The students are thinking that they have found the brain but Mrs. Vibbert informed them that they dont have brains. Its now clean-up time and the noise level has gotten even higher. A student is pretending to vomit, maybe she is not pretending. Hope she is ok. A few students cut their Squid into small pieces it looks discusting. The room is now clean but the horrible smell still lingers this is the life a 7th grade science class.
